Dr. Helen Caldicott is an Australian paediatrician, author and nuclear opponent. In 1956, at the age of just 17, she was one of the few women to enter the University of Adelaide Medical School. Five years later she successfully completed her studies and went to the USA on a three-year scholarship at Harvard Medical School. After her return to Australia, the doctor specializes in paediatrics and sets up the country’s first department for the congenital metabolic disease cystic fibrosis at Adelaide Children’s Hospital. She then returned to Harvard Medical School to teach paediatrics. During her stay in the United States, she and Dr. Eric Chivian founded the Physicians for Social Responsibility medical association and became its president. From then on, Helen Caldicott travelled constantly to educate people about the dangers of nuclear energy and the threats posed by nuclear weapons at international universities. In the 1982 documentary “If You Love This Planet”, she explained the medical and social consequences of a nuclear war and won an Oscar. Three years later she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. In addition, she has already been awarded an honorary doctorate 21 times.
