“My name is Breonna Taylor. In the early morning hours of March 13, 2020 Louisville Metro Police broke into my home and murdered me. They shot me 8 times as they were looking for someone who was already in police custody. No one has been charged with my murder. I worked in health care and wanted to save lives.”

„Mein Name ist Breonna Taylor. Am 13. März 2020 brach die Louisville Metro Police in mein Haus ein und ermordete mich. Achtmal haben sie auf mich geschossen, während sich die gesuchte Person bereits in Polizeigewahrsam befand. Ich habe in der Gesundheitspflege gearbeitet. Ich wollte Leben retten.“

On March 13, 2020, Black American Breonna Taylor rose to notoriety when she was shot dead by police in her own home. Her death then became – alongside that of George Floyd – a symbol of racist police violence and has been at the center of the Black Lives Matter protests ever since. But how did it come to this? When the 26-year-old paramedic from Louisville comes home from work that night, little does she know it will be her last. After dinner she watches a movie with her partner Kenneth Walker, then they go to sleep. Shortly after midnight, the couple startled when strangers banged on their front door. Since the plainclothes police officers don’t identify themselves as such, her boyfriend grabs a gun he legally owns and shoots one of the intruders in the leg. As a result, the officers return fire, hitting Breonna with at least eight projectiles. When the ambulance arrives, the rescue workers can only determine that she is dead. As it turns out later, her ex-boyfriend was the reason for the nightly drug raid. However, at the time of the fatal operation, he was under police surveillance more than 15 kilometers away. Breonna, on the other hand, had no criminal record and no drugs were found in her apartment. Her story thus remains a memorial in the fight against racism and police violence.
